We’re going to give you a new piece of equipment this year.

It’s small, lightweight and, best of all, free. It won’t lift a chunk of concrete, it can’t tell you if a board is level and you’ll wreck it if you try to sand a wall with it.

But you can open doors with it -- doors that lead to everything you could possibly want for your work site, office or repair shop. It’ll welcome you to new worlds of shiny skid-steers, showrooms jammed with brand new dump trucks and catalogues loaded with tools.

The Daily Reporter’s Equipment Guide 2002 might not be a key in the traditional sense, but, just like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, it’ll help you travel to places you’ve never been to before. That’s because much of the equipment showcased in the following pages hasn’t been around before.

It’s the latest and greatest that your suppliers have to offer. And this year, we’re not just stopping with a list of manufacturers and dealers. Ellen Hickok-Wall contacted your peers to get their take on what’s new with equipment. You won’t find every possible piece of equipment in this guide, but you’ll get a good taste of what’s hot for the upcoming year.

And you’ll find out what it takes to get a piece of equipment from the planning stages to the showroom floor. Jeremy Harrell took a look at how tools get tested, who tests them and what the benefits are for contractors and manufacturers who eventually use the equipment.

We made the key, and now we’ve put it in your hands. All you have to do is use it.
